Stars Reach Alien Puzzles: Artifacts With No Instructions
What was actually added
Update 8.4.0, shipped 21 August 2026, added alien artifact puzzles with an unusually blunt design note. In Playable Worlds’ own words, as players explore planets they get the opportunity to discover alien artifacts, and some of those artifacts are hidden behind mysterious puzzles that have to be solved — by design, these intentionally lack instructions.
That sentence is the whole reason step-by-step walkthroughs for these are scarce and unreliable. There is no tutorial, no in-game hint text, and no official solution document. A guide claiming a definitive method is either describing one specific artifact instance or making it up.
Where puzzles sit in the fiction
Artifacts are not decoration. The galaxy is the Garden, terraformed long ago by an ancient civilisation called the Old Ones, who tore holes in space to build the wormhole network the game still runs on. Their technology reads as magic to everyone alive now. The official overview describes smuggling clandestine Old One artifacts past Servitor suppression fields as a viable trade career — so artifacts are simultaneously a puzzle object, a lore object and an economic object.
The Corruption is also an Old One product: it was the accidental outcome of their genetic experiments, and the Servitors hunt it wherever they find it. Explored together, the artifact puzzles and the Corruption are the two halves of what the Old Ones left behind. Our planets page covers the Corruption in detail.
How to actually find them
Nothing here is a solution — these are the documented mechanics that put you in front of a puzzle in the first place.
- Explore, do not grind. Artifact discovery is tied to planetary exploration, not to a mission board. The Ranger tools that reveal terrain are what put artifacts in your path.
- Use the Pathfinder’s compass. Added in the Before the Frontier update, it displays at the top of the screen while the Pathfinder is equipped and gives a jittery direction cue to the nearest unsurveyed point, tightening as you close in. It exists as an accessibility alternative to the audio hot-and-cold cues, and it is the most reliable way to systematically cover ground.
- Inspect everything. The contextual Inspect option added in the same cycle gives detail on objects you discover in the world, including whether something is functioning or needs repair.
- Expect leaks before documentation. Puzzles were being teased on community streams in May 2026 — three months before they shipped — under the heading of leaks. That is the pattern: community streams and fireside chats surface features before any written note exists.
Why we are not printing a solution
This site does not have in-game testing capability, and a puzzle designed without instructions is exactly the case where a confidently wrong walkthrough does real damage — you would spend a session executing steps that were never true. What we can verify from official sources is what the puzzles are, when they arrived, and that their opacity is deliberate rather than an oversight.
If you are hunting a specific artifact puzzle, the highest-value sources are the official Discord linked from starsreach.com and the r/StarsReach subreddit, where solutions circulate as players find them. When a solution stabilises across multiple independent reports, it becomes something worth writing down. Until then, the honest answer is that Playable Worlds built these to be unsolved on arrival.
