Is Stars Reach Worth It? The Numbers, Not the Hype

Two weeks into Early Access, Stars Reach sits at Mixed on Steam — 269 positive against 185 negative out of 454 reviews, or 59% positive. There is no Metacritic score to weigh against it. The split is not really about whether the simulation works; the ambitious parts demonstrably do. It is about whether a galaxy this thin on players is worth $29.99 today: Steam's own counter has never recorded more than 227 concurrent players, and the studio shipped four hotfixes in the ten days after the 8.4.0 update.

Metacritic lists Stars Reach with no critic aggregate — its release line reads 'TBA - Early Access' and no scored reviews are attached. Preview coverage exists (PC Gamer, MMORPG.com, PCGamesN, ScreenRant) but previews are not scored reviews.

What the positive reviews are about

  • ✅ The simulation is not marketing copy — water flows, forests burn, terrain you reshape stays reshaped, and species you wipe out do not come back
  • ✅ Horizontal skill trees with a Skill Cap deliver the classless Star Wars Galaxies structure almost nobody else is attempting in 2026
  • ✅ One shardless galaxy with no server select, so there is no wrong realm to roll on
  • ✅ Visible, dated development: four hotfixes in the ten days after 8.4.0, each with a public note

What the negative reviews are about

  • ❌ Concurrent players peak in the low hundreds, which is thin for a game whose economy and settlements assume other people
  • ❌ Wipes are still on the table during Early Access, with a final one when Early Access ends
  • ❌ Windows only — no Mac, no Linux, no Steam Deck rating, no console version
  • ❌ Systems are still moving under you: 8.4.0 doubled homestead prices, moved Tailoring out of Crafting, and reassigned Xenobiology XP
  • ❌ 16 GB of RAM in the minimum spec, and no published recommended spec at all

The honest framing on price

$29.99 buys an Early Access build that is genuinely doing something almost nobody else is attempting, in a galaxy that currently holds a few hundred concurrent players at peak, with wipes still on the table. Playable Worlds has stated the game goes free-to-play at 1.0. If your reason to play is the simulation and the classless skill trees, paying now is buying the experiment. If your reason is a living player economy, the honest advice is to watch the concurrents and the roadmap first.
